St. Maarten/Martin
May 14th, 2008The gateway to the Windward Islands is St. Maarten/Martin. I know, I know, whats’ with the name that way? Well the legend of it’s name and it’s purpose in the center of the Caribbean is far more interesting than the island itself. Back in the “Jack Sparrow” days when these islands were gambling chips, St. M’s ownership was resolved by two comprising men not interested in fighting for it. So a Dutchman and Frenchman met at one spot, either east or west end, and began walking the perimeter…when they met again that was the border. So St.Maarten is Dutch spelling, and St. Martin in French. The island operates as two separate countries. Possibly like now where else, you can traverse this border with no additional check points, border patrol etc. That’s the coolest thing I know about it.
Most people know St. M as a cruise ship port-of-call, it is among the busiest in the Caribbean. For those living in the lesser known, much more pristine, islands around her, St. M is merely a non-stop flight destination from many places around the world. To many more St. M is among the most popular, protected, and convenient stops for yachties. Ships of all sizes and propulsion types. As for those “Cruise” lovers, there is the all important “District” that is as American a water front as they get. The three most important activities are there; Lots of shopping, eating, and beaching…oh’ yeah and as if you didn’t throw enough money away already, gambling. As for the regional locals, this island serves only one purpose beyond a bus station, Goods! We can buy anything we need, in a limited variety. We can order and receive any convenience imaginable. I will give those “cruise lovers” one credit, I am a photo guy right, well…electronics are insanely cheaper. Usually thirty percent or so less than U.S. and internet prices, and tax free!
This island has incredible and untapped potential. Amazing beaches, all the income needed to make her beautiful and gem like. Yet, this is among the biggest let downs I have ever seen in traveling. Beach fronts abandoned from previous hurricanes. Only basic debris removed it seems. It’s dirty, over populated, and has at least five times too many cars!
So…I would not under any circumstance choose this island as a destination for any occasion, especially a honeymoon. Lord knows a marriage needs all the help it can get, and it would not bid well to start it here.
Just an opinion of a island hopper.
